Practicing these five total hip replacement recovery tips can help you to have a smooth and successful recovery.

1. HABIT Get into the habit of exercising regularly – Start an exercise routine before surgery or join an exercises class (Download my FREE Tips report for exercise examples). Do your exercises little and often throughout the day.

2. MOVEMENT Most people are able to walk within the same day or next day of surgery with a walking aid. With successful Rehabilitation most people can resume normal routine activities within 6 weeks of their total hip replacement recovery. Once light activity becomes achievable, it’s important to incorporate healthy exercise into your recovery program. Recommended activities include gradually increased walking and light household activities (sitting, standing, climbing stairs). Movement is essential to a healthy recovery. Take small 5-10 minute rest breaks in between activities to prevent fatigue.

3. DIET- Pay attention to diet and weight Excess weight can put stress on your new hip joint and reducing the lifespan of the hip. In some cases there is a higher risk of complication after surgery with excessive weight. Maintaining a healthy body weight before and after your surgery can help to improve your recovery process and increase the ultimate lifespan of your joint. Additionally, make sure to maintain a balanced diet during your recovery to improve nutrients to the healing tissue and reduce recovery time.

4. HEALING- Circulation Certain exercises can help to promote blood flow to the hip which in turn helps reduce recovery time. Exercise can prevent clots in the leg which can occur after sugary. Lastly increases blood flow by exercise helps to reduce swelling at the hip. These include: 1. Regularly squeezing the thigh and calf. 2. Motion exercises for the legs that utilize full range of leg motions 3. Walking with or without the assistance of supportive devices (such as walker/cane)

5. Make Household Preparations Your mobility and ability to complete normal, daily tasks following your surgery will be largely reduced. Before your surgery, make practical modifications to your house so that the things you’ll need will be accessible without strenuous movement. Additionally, make plans with friends, family, or carers to ensure that someone will be available to help with tasks like cooking, bathing, and running household tasks.

Preparing correctly for your total hip replacement will reduce recovery time and improve the chances of a successful outcome. Keep these important tips in mind as you prepare for sugary and recovery after. You should always consult a professional rehabilitation therapist before exercising and especially after surgery to prevent injury.
